Bardney - St Lawrence

Bardney St Lawrence

Church Details

Bardney church was built by the monks of Bardney Abbey in 1434 because the villagers created a nuisance during the worship in the monastery. Come and see the wall paintings in the chancel and the charity boards over the north and south doors which commemorate bequests to the village. There will be exhibitions of local crafts in the church.

Brocklesby - All Saints

Church Details

All Saints Brocklesby is a lovely 13th century church retaining its eighteenth century horse-box pews and situated in the beautiful and tranquil setting of Brocklesby Park.  It is lit by the fine stained glass windows and is the home of many memorials to the Pelham Family (Earls of Yarborough).  The organ, which was originally built for Brocklesby Hall in 1773, has a case made of mahogony by James Wyatt, carved with flowers and musical instruments in the neo-classical style.

Buslingthorpe - St Michael

Church Details

The church is one of the few remaining buildings on a deserted mediaeval village site and, apart from the tower, was rebuilt in 1835 in brick. Unassuming outside it hides treasures within: two 14th century monuments to the de Buslingthorpe family, one an effigy of a knight in armour on a tomb chest showing clearly the clothes worn in battle at that time. The church is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.

Caistor - Methodist Church

Church Details

A Victorian grade 2 listed building built in 1842; the listing includes the pews, decorative ceiling rose and organ with pump handle. Recent interior alterations have been sympathetic to the character of the building. Organ music may be playing during the weekend. Christian Aid lunches available on Saturday from 11.30am to 1pm.

Caistor - St Peter & St Paul

Church Details

Parts of church Saxon, Norman, early English and perpendicular windows are good examples of stained glass. Visitor leaflets available, guides present. Demonstration of bell ringing on a simulator Saturday 2pm-4pm. Also guided tours of the church tower at these times. The church is built within what was a Roman Fort. Part of the Roman wall can be seen on the south side of the churchyard. Lunches available Saturday from 11.30am – 1pm.

Claxby - St Mary

Church Details

Peacefully situated at the foot of the Wolds, on the edge of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The chancel has two 13th century corbel heads and an astonishingly elaborate 16th century monument. Restored in the 1860s, the church includes brasses, an unusual small organ and beautiful stained glass. The West window, only 30 years old, commemorates a local man and has evidence of his artefacts. Manned from 10am to 4pm.

Clixby - All Hallows

Church Details

The chancel of this early 13th century church was ruinous until 1889 when it was gently restored and a West porch added. It now seems like a roadside shrine. In the floor is a 14th century slab with an incised cross and chalice and the remains of a Lombardic inscription to a priest. Latin inscriptions in praise of the Virgin adorn the wooden ceiling. A fine font and pews have been rescued from other redundant churches. The church is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.

Cuxwold - St Nicholas

Church Details

Tiny church, prettily set on rising ground. The lower part of the tower is 11th century and the church has a Norman font and its original Norman arch opening to the nave with lancets in. The organ, recently fully restored, was built in the late 1800s' by Thomas Casson, recognised as the father of modern pedal organs. Visiting organists are invited to play. Flower display featuring Lincolnshire events. Home cooked all day breakfast, soups, cakes and tea/coffee in the comfort of a family home. Served and Sunday 9am until 5pm. East Barkwith - St Mary

Church Details

St Mary's is a medieval church, restored in the nineteenth century, set in a well-kept churchyard. Notable features include: a medieval figure of the Virgin and Child over the porch, a scratch dial by the porch door, a fifteenth century font with symbols of the Passion, a metal pulpit on the Arts and Crafts style and a stained glass window by Edward Payne. There will be an exhibition of local arts, crafts and photographs.

Church Details

A friendly church which has absorbed the changes from the 13th century onwards, as shown in our history book (on sale). It has a splendid Victorian East window, four bells (two are pre-reformation) and one of the best small organs in the area. The presence of the Polish Air Force, here in WWII, is commemorated in many ways. Our exhibition theme is “memories”. Cakes, plants, books and bric-a-brac on sale. Can you see our amusing gargoyle?

Goltho - St George

Church Details

This little brick church stands alone in its clump of trees, approached across a field which covers the site of an ancient village and where the great house of the Grantham's stands. The contemporary furnishings include a splendid pedimented reredos, a two decker pulpit, handsome altar rails, box pews and some early bench ends. The church is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.

Grasby - All Saints

Church Details

The church is in a prominent position overlooking the wonderful Ancholme Valley. It is on "Tennyson Trail" because the poet, Charles Tennyson Turner (Alfred's brother) was the vicar from 1835-1879 when most of the restoration work was done on the building. There will be floral displays in Church and a selection of gardens will be open round the village from 2pm-5pm on Sunday 9th May. Please come and enjoy our lovely village.

This beautiful church dates back to the 12th century. It contains exquisite stained glass in which the whole of the Christian story is beautifully depicted. There is also a magnificent marble and mosaic reredos. There will be a craft display and light refreshments.

Church Details

St Peter’s stands in a remote, leafy hamlet opposite the site of a moat. There is 14th century stained glass in the South aisle, a time when St Peter’s supported the convent at Elsham. The church is cared for the by The Churches Conservation Trust.

St Andrew's is a grade 2 listed building with many interesting features including a chancel which is at a slight angle to the rest of the church, asymmetrical East window and three ancient bells dating from the 16th century. Coffee morning on Saturday including plants, tombola and other stalls.

Langton by Wragby - St Giles

Church Details

The church dates back at least to the 12th century. It is the birthplace of Stephen Langton who became a Cardinal and Archbishop of Canterbury. He was prime mover behind the formulation of the Magna Carta. Displays in church about Stephen Langton and the Magna Carta.

Large impressive Methodist Church, open in 1863.  Pews with doors where the "well to do" sat at the back which is reflected in the seating.  Despite dwindling congregations the building has been kept in good condition over the years which gives it the "wow"factor to those who enter the church for the first time.  Saturday morning a Spring Fair at which the local primary school will entertan from 10am.  Sunday Chapel Anniversary worship at 10.45am to which all are welcome.

Our parish church was recorded in the Domesday Survey of 1085. The massive Saxon tower, built of local ironstone is currently being restored. We continue to offer visitors a warm welcome. We will be holding a fun artist competition for those who would like to paint or draw part or all of the church between 10am-4.30pm on Saturday. Different age groups for children, teenagers and adults. Judging will be Saturday night. Sunday morning we will be exhibiting the finished products and there will be a choral production in the afternoon and completing the day will be Evensong and presentation of prizes to the winners.

St Oswald's is surrounded by a deserted medieval village site. Inside is a surprising number of notable monuments, both in brass and stone, dating from the 14th-16th century. Church Details

The unremarkable exterior of this small medieval church does not prepare visitors for the breathtaking surprise within. Behind the altar, occupying the chancel and an adjacent chapel, are three wonderful late 16th and early 17th century monuments to the St Paul family, fascinating for their sheer opulence and completely different styles. The most imposing tomb, to Sir Thomas St Paul who died in 1582, is lavish and highly coloured. The church is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.

Snelland - All Saints

Church Details

This beautiful atmospheric church dates back to the 12th century. It contains beautiful carved stone medieval faces and a rare "Leper's window" that enabled succour to be passed to those with leprosy who had to stay outside the church. Ancient sundial on south elevation. Thomas Retford, vicar, courageously gave his life in the Lincolnshire rising.

Southrey - St John the Divine

Church Details

Quite unique, built by the local joiner and opened on 4 May 1898. A service is held weekly, holy communion monthly on the second Sunday. The only stained glass window was dedicated in memory of the Rev'd Chalmers who instigated the building of the church. He was raised to glory in 1896.

Thoresway - St Mary

Church Details

A peaceful, rural church, solidly built of yellow sandstone was extensively repaired by James Fowler in 1880, and recently repaired in 2008/09. The remains of a Norman arch on west side, and 13th century arcades are impressive, as are inlaid ancient tombs. A displays of the history of Thoresway and home-made cakes, teas and coffees offered all day.
