Bishop Norton - St Peter

Bishop Norton St Peter

Church Details

Exhibits of hats, flowers and photographs of local people. Children's corner, organ open to players. The stained glass is modern dating from 1973. It depicts St Peter handed keys by Jesus, fishermen and sheep. Sandwiches and cakes, hot and cold drinks served in church.

Blyborough - St Alkmunds

Church Details

Built prior to 1312, St Alkmunds was rebuilt in 1877 but there is still old work remaining in the tiny tower, the West Wall and the 13th century chancel arch and nave arcade.  The church houses three medieval niches, an old font, a Cricifixion (on the rood beam) carved by Flemish craftsmen more than six centuries ago and the tomb of the 15th century priest Robert Conyng.  One of the stained glass windows is dedicated to the memory of two Luard brothers and the church still has a hatchment bearing the Luard family crest.

Blyton - St Martin

Church Details

St Martin's is a war memorial church featuring flags of the allies from the 1st World War. The lady altar is dedicated to the second world war. Edward King is depicted in a Kempe stained glass window above the lady altar. Enid Blyton has family connections with both church and village as recorded in her letters to the incumbent of that time. This year's theme is 'weddings' with displays and archive registers. You are invited to join us for tea and wedding cake.

Brattleby - St Cuthbert

Church Details

This is a small church with Norman features.  There is a base of a Saxon cross in the churchyard and various memorials and beautiful stained glass windows.  Interesting display of photographs showing the inside of the tower during its cleaning in 2009.

Tucked into the hillside with magnificent views across the Trent Valley, our church features stained glass windows depicting former Bishops of Lincoln and the Monson Gallery housing coronation chairs from the last three coronations. This year our flower festival will depict "Village Life".

Cherry Willingham - St Peter & St Paul

Church Details

St Peter and St Paul is a wonderful example of Georgian architecture with a beautiful reredos behind the altar. The modern octagonal lantern was designed by Louis Osman who also designed the coronet for The Prince of Wales. Our exhibitions this year will feature "The Wider World".

Corringham - St Laurence

Church Details

This year, come and look at our rich stained glass heritage, the Kempe East window, and the Jesse window in the Memorial Chapel, described by Simon Jenkins as "alive with prophets … and set against thick oak leaves". Nearby in the South wall is C Whitworth Whall's "Christ the Good Shepherd" window.... and there's more to see in the Lady Chapel....

East Stockwith - St Peter

Church Details

St Peter, East Stockwith suffered badly in the 2008 earthquake which brought the spire down, through the roof of the chancel. Also damage was done to the roof of the nave. All repairs have now been carried out.

Fillingham - St Andrew

Church Details

A small country church set by a lake, surrounded by trees and fields. Renowned for its Rector John Wycliffe, famous scholar and theologian of the 14th century. He was Master of Balliol College, Oxford and the church still enjoys the patronage of this college to this day.

Fiskerton - St Clement of Rome

Church Details

The north door is Norman, as are all the arches between the nave and chancel and the North aisle. Beautiful stained glass in the East and Skepper windows. Remembrance book and links with the RAF squadrons are in the Lady Chapel. We hope to have church records from the archives on display together with historical artefacts found by the farmer in local fields.

Gainsborough - Friends Meeting House

Church Details

Built in 1704, the oldest religious building in Gainsborough. The burial ground behind is now a garden, a peaceful oasis in the centre of town. We offer a quiet environment.

Members available to give information about the building and Quaker way of life. Come and rest your feet, body and mind, enjoy a cup of tea and a chat.

Gainsborough - The Friends of Gainsborough Cemetries & Chapel

Church Details

The chapel was opened by Bishop Christopher Wordsworth, nephew of William the poet, in 1876.  We are working with the Gainsborough Town Council to renovate and research the history of both the chapel and the cemetary.  Bio-diversity is an important aspect of our work recording flower, tree and wildlife.  Peter Bradshaw has researched all the WW1 soldiers in the cemetary and our exhibition will feature them.  Walks around the cemetary. The front porch of our church is adorned with the Tournay Arms and a rare medieval ‘Pieta’, a representation of the Virgin with dead Christ across her knees. We have stained glass by Whale and box pews.

A small bright welcoming church with large Norman tower, rest of the church 1700s'. Magnificent reredos with original hangings. Small organ, one of the few surviving organs by Benjamin Flight 1767-1847, still in working order and can be played. Some stained glass. Memorials to past rectors. Some unusual gravestones, on legs. Activities concert Friday 14th 7.30pm. Census 1841 to 1911 inclusive. Village and church history, photographs. Records 1537 onwards, rectors from 1820.

Greetwell - All Saints

Greetwell All Saints

Church Details

Lonely amid green pastures by the river Witham, cows graze those green pastures and the Church has been described as "All Saints over the cowpats". The church pre-dates 1066 and traces of the Saxon origin remain in the present building. The theme for this year is "Famous Sons of Lincolnshire" depicted in a Flower Festival.

You will find Greetwell church one mile to the east of Lincoln on the road to Cherry Willingham, over the cattlegrid down the lane, LN3 4NG, a very special sight will greet you and a warm welcome awaits you.

Hackthorn - St Michael & All Angels

Church Details

A beautiful Victorian Gothic church with fine carved woodwork, situated among trees and parkland of Hackthorn Hall overlooking the lake. There is an outstanding 1869 Nicholson organ of historic importance restored in 1999.  A peel of six bells was installed in 2006.  The bells and bell chamber can be viewed.  Genealogy....  Did your ancestors come from Hackthorn?  Kneelers on display.

Ingham - All Saints

Church Details

Displays from groups that are active in making Ingham "The Place to Live" for young and old. The organ will be played during the weekend. The church was rebuilt in 1792, restored in 1896 and porch added in 1931. Beautiful East window dates from 1906.  Work to rewire the church will take place in 2010.

Ingham - Methodist Church

Church Details

A typical example of a Utilitarian Methodist Chapel, little changed since it was built in 1836. It is the only remaining active Methodist chapel in the cliffside villages between Lincoln and Kirton in Lindsey. The neighbouring community room, originally a “general Sunday School House,” dates from 1851.

Church Details

The church was built on the site of a medieval church which was used by Katherine Swynford. 13th century archway still in existence although much repaired. The story of Katherine and John of Gaunt as fictionalised in 'Katherine' by Anya Seton is on display in the church.

Knaith - St Mary

Church Details

A visitor described St Mary’s as “odd but delightful, with stunning views of the River Trent”. St Mary’s curious appearance reflects it’s intriguing history. A late Saxon building, it was enlarged to incorperate a nunnery around 1330. Interesting features include a Jacobean pulpit, 14th century font, stone effigies and altar baldacchino.  Visitors will receive a warm welcome, light refreshments and a chance to browse in the book sale.

Marton - St Margaret of Antioch

Church Details

The church was built at the end of the Saxon period then partly destroyed and rebuilt by the Normans. The Herringbone brickwork in the tower must be seen. Please see the paved stone crucifix embedded in the chancel wall. Christ's feet are shown separated. Display of kneelers worked by local people.

Morton - St Paul

Church Details

Boasting ten Burne-Jones windows, a William Morris carpenter in the chancel. St Paul's is also a perfect example of a Victorian church. The font is of Frosterley marble with a beautifully carved wooden canopy suspended from the ceiling by pulleys.

The organ, built in 1891 is by Augustus Gern to the system which he invented and for which he was awarded the highest award at the 1885 International Inventors Exhibition.

Nettleham - All Saints

Church Details

The church dates from Saxon times, has many beautiful stained glass windows including the Hayward window at the East end. A lovely setting by the beck in an attractive village. It is a living church with many varied activities and is also a wonderful place for quiet contemplation and prayer.  Church archives will be on display, dating back from 1586.

Church Details

In 2005 the church was re-ordered. The pews were removed and the nave area re-ordered to accommodate a classroom for the adjacent primary school. A toilet and kitchen were installed at the same time.

Normanby by Spital - St Peter

Church Details

This small village church has early 12th to 15th century work of good quality. There are fine limestone arcades with beautifully carved capitals and a sturdy and handsome tower. Foundations of a former apse are visible and further research may show that the church is of earlier date than the 12th century. 18th century additions include interesting Benefaction Boards. exhibition of work by members of local art group.

Northorpe - St John the Baptist

Church Details

Standing on a mound in the centre of the village, our church is an unknown gem. The capitals of the sturdy pillars are decorated with scallops - all different. There are intriguing Masons’ marks on one of them, a 1498 incised slab, a 1595 brass and medieval altar stone. There will be an exhibition of local scenes in water colour by the well known artist Philip Walker and other local artists.

An 11th century church with ancient font. We will feature an exhibition showing the men of the villages who went to war in 1914. We will also feature a "Voices of 39" exhibition highlighting life in the villages during World War II.

Riseholme - St Mary

Riseholme St Mary

Church Details

Saint Mary's church is sited in the grounds of the University and was built by Bishop John Kaye. He was the first Bishop to reside in Riseholme Hall and he had this attractive 14th century church style built at his own expense to a design by S.S. Teulon.

It was consecrated on 7th August 1851. A visit to see the East window and the Chancel window presented by Balliol College, Oxford is a must. Bishop John Kaye and the noted Bishop Christopher Wordsworth are both buried in the churchyard.

Our church is a little gem because it has several unique features, stone faced exterior with red brick interior typical of James Fowler and semi circular apse with wooden rafters depicting a cross.

Our theme is "Morning has broken", a Celebration of Creation and Nature with displays of flowers, old farming implements, a village history and our village trail. On Sunday at 3 pm there will be a Rogation Walk around the village. Cakes & plants for sale.

South Carlton - St John the Baptist

Church Details

This charming Norman church nestled under the Lincoln cliff dates back to the 14th century boasting many interesting features; Norman aisle arcades, a Perpendicular oak screen (1335-1530) and a pulpit dedicated to the men who served at RAF South Carlton Aerodrome in the Great War. The North Chapel houses the Monson tomb, erected in 1625, illustrating exquisite delicacy in the carving of its effigies, making it one of Lincolnshire's noblest 17th century tombs.

Stow - St Mary

Church Details

Visit one of the most important Saxon Parish Churches in England, with its massive Saxon pillar, early Norman nave and a later Norman chancel. See the remains of a Thomas Beckett wall painting and a graffiti carving of a Viking ship dating from the 10th/11th century. A 13th century font with no overtly Christian symbols, many 15th century pews with Victorian copies.  Lincoln Mystery Plays Trust present the Hollow Crown on Saturday at 7.30pm, details 01427 788787.

Torksey - St Peter

Church Details

Situated in the centre of Torksey village our church dates from the 12th/13th century, with later extensions. It has an interesting font, with decoration similar to that on the columns separating the nave and Lady Chapel.

The front of the altar is formed from the tombstone of the last Abbess of Torksey and it is believed that the 'sheelagh-na-gig' in an alcove in the south wall could have been used to teach young girls the 'facts of life' before marriage.

Situated at the east end of Waddingham with sign on north approach road into village. A quiet position on hill with lovely views. Its origin was a 13th century church, St Peter's, which was worshipped by monks. It later amalgamated with St Mary's of Stainton to become St Mary and St Peter. Inscriptions and layout of graveyard memorials available.
